Title
Houses and a public house in Northumberland Street
Description
View of a pair of late nineteenth-century four-storey terraced houses at 8-9 Northumberland Street and the Sherlock Holmes public house at 10 Northumberland Street, near Charing Cross, City of Westminster. The houses have identical panelled doors with fanlights above and pediments over. Three steps and railings can be seen above a basement level. The buildings are the headquarters of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects. There is a streetlamp visible. The Sherlock Holmes public house at 10 Northumberland Street can be seen with a painted hanging sign visible advertising the Whitbread pub. The building has three storeys with dormers in the roofspace. It was originally known as the Northumberland Hotel and converted to a pub in the 1880s and renamed the Northumberland Arms. Renamed the Sherlock Holmes in 1957, it houses a large collection of memorabilia relating to the fictional detective. The houses and pub remain today. The street was originally known as Hartshorn Lane in the eighteenth century.
