Description
Front elevation of former Fire Station, 11-13 Great Scotland Yard, City of Westminster. A London Fire brigade fire station. Commissioned in the 1880s when its old site in Chandos Street became too small, it was completed in 1884 and provided married quarters for 14 firemen. It was built for horse-drawn engines with stables at the rear, and a look out tower on the roof. The fire station closed in 1922 and was converted to offices, occupied by the Insurance Unemployment Board until 1939 when, at the outbreak of World War II, it became an intelligence and interrogation centre. It was later the press centre for the 1951 Festival of Britain. In 1953, it became the home of the newly-formed Civil Service Club. The frontage was restored in 1989. Two cars are parked on the street.
