Description
Front elevation of terraced houses at 115-141 Old Montague Street, Whitechapel, looking north-east by Davenant Street. Some of the terrace has already been demolished and the doors and windows of the remaining properties have been boarded up. A sign on the wall points the way to Martineaus Ltd, a sugar refiner since 1797. Number 117 has a painted sign advertising "Gents Presser Trade" and may still be occupied as a man in a flat cap stands near the open doorway. Pauline House, the tower block on the Chicksand estate which can be seen in the background of this photograph, is still partially covered in scaffolding as construction has almost been completed. Pauline House was built on the site of a Board school, which had been destroyed during World War II. Two iron bollards are visible and two workmen are inspecting a hole in the road at the entrance to Davenant Street that they may have just excavated as a pneumatic drill lies on the ground behind them. The terrace no longer exists and has been replaced by new residential housing.
