Isokon Flats in Lawn Road
Isokon Flats, Lawn Road, Hampstead. Opened in 1934 as an experiment in minimalist urban living, it is a reinforced concrete block of 36 flats, designed by Canadian engineer Wells Coates for Molly and Jack Pritchard. The building was Grade I listed in 1974, List Entry Number: 1379280. There have been many noted residents including Agatha Christie and a number of Soviet spies. After falling into dereliction in the 1990s, it was purchased by Notting Hill Housing Association from Camden Council. In 2003 the building was sympathetically refurbished by Avanti Architects and is now occupied by key workers under a shared-ownership scheme, whilst the larger flats were sold outright on leases. A Morris Oxford, a Ford Cortina and a Vauxhall Corsair are parked outside.
