The Matthew Smith collection is held at Guildhall Art Gallery. Matthew Smith (1879-1959) was a painter whose subjects ranged from landscape, figures, flowers and still life.
He was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire and studied at the Manchester School of Art, the Slade School and under the artist Henri Matisse in Paris where he became interested in Fauvism. Smith joined the London Group of artists in 1920 who were formed in 1913 from the merger of the Camden Town Group and the Fitzroy Street Group.
