Grim's Dyke House in Old Redding
Description
Main entrance gate of Grim's Dyke House (also known as Grimsdyke), Old Redding, Harrow Weald. This Grade II* listed house was built by Richard Norman Shaw in 1870-72, combining late Elizabethan style with Gothic revivalism, for the artist Frederick Goodall. It is best known as the home of the dramatist W.S. Gilbert of the opera partnership Gilbert and Sullivan, who lived and farmed there for the last two decades of his life. In 1936 Grim's Dyke was purchased jointly by the Middlesex County Council and the London County Council and used as rehabilitation centre for tuberculosis patients. From 1963, the house has been used as a location for films and television such as Hammer Horror, Avengers, and Metroland by John Betjeman. It was converted into a hotel in 1970.
