Description
A view of numbers 378-414 Commercial Road, Stepney, between Devonport Street and Steels Lane. Buildings include F.W Jordan Turf Accountants (a former public house) on the corner with Devonport Street, which along with the building next door no longer exists. A four-storey block now occupies this corner site. There are various Grade II listed buildings along the terrrace, including numbers 402-404, the present day offices of Stirling Ackroyd (the two buildings being adjoined and renamed Israf Ali House), along with number 400 which until 1978 was the residential address of the Bishop of Stepney. The terrace is dominated by The former East End Maternity Hospital (East End Mothers' Lying in Home), which opened in 1889, joined the NHS in 1948 and closed in 1968. A clock overhangs the pavement on the extension of the hospital. More recently The Steel's Lane Health Centre, the building has a Grade II listing.
