Description
This view shows a temporary display on the first floor of the Old Town Hall, Whittaker Avenue, in the Central Richmond conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. The display is believed to be titled ‘A Face for the Riverside’, and shows maps, plans, and photographs of the Richmond and East Twickenham riverside landscape, predating Quinlan Terry’s classical revival redevelopment of the late 1980s. The Town Hall building first opened in 1893 and served as Richmond Council’s town hall until the formation of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in the 1960s, after which a new Civic Centre was built in central Twickenham. The Old Town Hall now houses the Library Service’s Information and Reference Library, Local Studies Collection, Museum of Richmond, and Riverside Gallery. It is listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit.
