Houses in Albert Road
Description
Albert Road is a spinal route running parallel to this stretch of the Thames, which served the substantial commercial and residential development built around the Royal Docks during the late nineteenth century. Parts of the road were either in North Woolwich, Kent, or East Ham, Essex, originally having sequences of street numbering in two directions, but all is now within the London Borough of Newham. This view shows a pair of houses from a terrace believed to have been on the north side of Albert Road between Robert Street and Church Street at numbers 52 and 54. The ornate column just visible to the left of view is thought to have belonged to a corner shop at number 56. All of the windows have patterned lace and fabric curtains and blinds. A notice fixed to the brickwork above the adjoining front doors says THIS PROPERTY FOR SALE BY PRIVATE TREATY - For particulars apply to S Long, Auctioneer, 8 Thomas St Woolwich. Considering the building probably dated from the early 1890s, some properties in this area suffered from subsidence, possibly due to the development being built on marshland, and cracking can be seen in the brickwork above the central first floor windows. However, the terrace is shown on post-war OS maps having also survived severe bombing in the locality. There is handwriting to the foot of the image stating 'Robert Street [deleted] Albert Road - nos 52 + 54 Photographed by S B Bolas & Co'. The site was redeveloped in the late twentieth century and the gardens of modern houses in Albert Walk have replaced most of this stretch of Albert Road.
