Maisonettes in Alliance Road
Description
Alliance Road, Plumstead, was developed during the interwar years on the site of the brickworks in Wickham Valley between Woolwich Cemetery and Bostall Woods. This view shows part of the terrace of early twentieth century maisonettes, which still stand towards the north end of the road, in particular numbers 16-24. These differ in style from those at 2-14, the window bays being single storey. The two visible entrances have four front doors set in a perpendicular pattern, the nearest for example serving numbers 16, 16a, 18 and 18a. The entrance to the end pair at 24/24a is out of view on an angled corner elevation. The low front boundary wall is shown in a state of disrepair. The bare trees planted in the wet pavement, and the wet rooftiles suggest the photograph was taken during the winter months. The entire terrace has since been rendered and painted, with modern glazing units fitted, although the ornate surrounds have been retained.
