Title
Building in Waterloo Place
Description
A view of the front elevation of grand commercial building at 11 and 12 Waterloo Place, Westminster. The building replaced part of John Nash's via triumphalis on the west side of Waterloo Place in the early twentieth century. It was built of Portland stone. Signs refers to Martins Bank Ltd, later subsumed into Barclays Bank. The grasshopper, a symbol of Martins Bank, hangs over one of the entrances. The building has eight giant Corinthian columns rising through the first and second floors. In the tympanum is an empty space for a crest surrounded by swags and palm fronds. It has about five storeys over the basement. A balustrade surrounds the basement area. An estate agent's signs offer ground floor offices to let. Dating from the early to mid-1920s, numbers 11,12,14,16 and 17 Waterloo Place, 29 Charles II street and 9-12 Pall Mall were Grade II listed in 1972; listing number 1239275. The building forms a pair with a matching bank building on the opposite side of Waterloo Place.
