Description
View of entrance to Royal Opera Arcade, St James's, from Charles II Street, looking south towards Pall Mall. The arcade connects Charles II Street with Pall Mall and is the earliest example of a London arcade created on the model of Parisian late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century passages. It was built in 1816-1818 by John Nash and G. S. Repton and is the only surviving part of the Opera House complex. Grade I listed, listing number 1235289. The entrance to the arcade is a stone archway with doric pilasters. Above is a balustrade. The list of businesses within the arcade can be seen painted within the archway. W. English Hatter and Army and Navy Outfitter occupies a large part of the arcade (numbers 3 & 4 as hatter and 9-12 as outfitter). There is also A. Winston & [Son?] and Burgess & Son, a hairdressers, and Farrow & Jackson Ltd. at number 17. To the right of the entrance to the arcade is a shop front at number 24 Royal Opera Arcade with the name Farrow & Jackson Ltd. There is also a royal court of arms and BY APPOINTMENT above the shop. Between the shop and the arcade is a no parking sign. Although named as 24 Charles II Steet, this shop front is included in the Royal Opera Arcade Grade I listing.
