Title
Interior of a building in Prince's Gate
Description
First-floor rear room at 19 Prince's Gate, Knightsbridge. The terrace, whose front elevation overlooks Hyde Park, was built 1846-1850 by master builder John Elger to a design by architect Harvey Lonsdale Elmes. The land was acquired from the Earl of Listowel's Kingston House estate and the terrace named after the nearby Prince's Gate entrance to Hyde Park. The whole terrace was Grade II listed in 1970, listing number 1265482. 19 Prince's Gate has five storeys plus basement, portico entrance, first-floor balconies, cast-iron railings and stucco decoration at attic level. The walls and door of this rear room are elaborately decorated to look like Rococo panelling and the pattern is reflected in the plaster moulding on the ceiling. The fireplace surround is in a similar Rococo style. The cornicing with moulded dentils is probably an original detail. The building appears unoccupied and undergoing building works, as the room is empty of furniture and in a poor state of repair, with a hole in the parquet flooring. 19 Prince's Gate lies within the Knightsbridge Conservation Area designated in 1968 and is still extant as of 2023. Nearby 14 Prince's Gate reputedly sold for around 70 million pounds in 2015, indicating the character of the area and the grandeur of the buildings in this terrace.
