Buildings in Northumberland Avenue
Description
General view of late nineteenth-century buildings in Northumberland Avenue looking north-west towards Nelson's column and Trafalgar Square, Westminster. The Constitutional Club at 28 Northumberland Avenue was designed in the Queen Anne style by Sir Robert William Edis. The building was established as a gentlemen's club in 1883 and occupies a prominent corner position sandwiched between Northumberland Avenue and Northumberland Street. Exterior sun blinds can be seen on some of the windows. The building was demolished in the early 1960s to be replaced by a modern office development. The club was disbanded in 1979. Today, the ground floor is occupied by various businesses including the Korean Cultural Centre. Adjacent at 12-14 Northumberland Avenue is a view of the Grand Hotel. This was demolished in the late 1980s and a new hotel with the same name was erected in a similar style. To the right is a terrace of four-storey buildings at 23-25 Northumberland Avenue. Signs advertise premises and shop to let. To the left is a partial view of Victoria Buildings, which later became used as the government war office buildings. The buildings are Grade II listed, listing number 1225350. A line of horse-drawn hackney carriages is parked in the street. Other horse-drawn vehicles can be seen. There is a child standing at the junction of Great Scotland Yard and Northumberland Avenue. Pedestrians can be seen. There are cast-iron bollards and a street lamp in view. Nelson's column can be seen in the distance.
