Description
Ornate marble mantlepiece at 35a Great George Street, Westminster, removed from the fireplace and displayed against a floral wallpapered wall. This house no longer exists. It was one of the elegant four-storey terraced houses developed in the 1750s by James Mallors along the north side of Great George Street, which contained decorative plasterwork, marble mantlepieces, carved joinery, wood panelling and wrought iron balustrades influenced by Robert Adam's neoclassical designs. All of these houses were demolished in 1910 along with the neighbouring buildings in Boar's Head Yard, Gardener's Lane, Delahay Street, Delahay Mews and King Street to clear the site for the construction of the South Block of the Government Offices Great George Street (GOGGS), the grand Grade II* listed office block designed by John Brydon and completed in 1912 which now stands on the site (listing number 1066103). Some of the decorative pieces from the Great George Street houses have been preserved in various London museums, mainly the Soane and Victoria and Albert Museums.
