Title
Buildings in Whitman Road and Longfellow Road
Description
Hall and houses at Whitman Road and Longfellow Road, Mile End. Two-storey terraced houses at 15-43 (on the left) and 45-74 (on the right) of Longfellow Road, which ran between Jupps Road and the Grand Union (now Regent’s) Canal, viewed from Whitman Road looking north. The hall, with a Gothic arch window, another Gothic arch above the door, a cross on the roof and another on the foundation stone, was the former Welsh Anglican Church of St Rhystyd End Road.
Longfellow Road’s main claim to fame is that Eddie Philips, British Light Heavyweight boxing champion between 1935-37, lived at number 57. In the centre foreground on the road is a notice with the numbers 24-7/6 chalked on it; a sign of imminent demolition. In the centre background are some of the buildings of Avon Wharf and a travelling crane. In the left foreground is a man in an apron with three boys. Beyond them is a man standing talking to a man in a car. At centre right is a boy on a bicycle. There are a lot of cars parked in the street, in front of almost every house. All these buildings have been demolished and Longfellow Road E3 no longer exists; it is now part of Mile End Park.
