View of Gardiners' Corner
Description
A view of Gardiners' Corner, Stepney, taken from Whitechapel High Street. Named after Gardiners' Department store (The Scotch House), with its dominant clock tower and triangular plot on the junction of Commercial Road and Whitechapel High Street. The five-storey Gardiners' was opened in the 1870s and specialised in miltary uniforms and Scottish clothing. It was destroyed by a massive fire in May 1972. There are numerous pedestrians, horse-drawn wagons and Trams. The tram-lined road surfaces are cobbled and there are various lamp posts and lanterns. There is a busy street market outside numbers 20-26 Whitechapel High Street, with stalls lining the road. Premises in this stretch of road include W. Coates & Co, Pearce and Plenty, and Salomond Boot Factory. These buildings no longer exist and Aldgate Tower, with an entrance to Aldgate East Underground Station, now occupies their site. The plot of land where Gardiners' once stood and the section of Commercial Road seen here are now a green space named New Drum Street, part of Aldgate Place redevelopment. The realigned Commercial Road now joins with Whitechapel High Street at the end of the terrace left of Gardiners'.
