View of Elephant and Castle
Description
View of the Elephant and Castle, Newington, looking north towards St George's Road. The Elephant and Castle, a major crossroads since Roman times, is named after a coaching inn set at the junction. The area suffered devastation on 10th May 1941 during World War II bombing. The bombed area in the foreground has been cleared and on this site is being built the London College of Printing, now the London College of Communication. On the site are temporary offices, building materials and a crane with a sign for Tersons. Behind the crane is a row of shops at 12-24 St George's Road, and adjacent is 67-68 London Road, a four-storey white office building with a shop on the ground floor, Burton's men tailors. These buildings were all demolished and on the site was built flats, Perronet House.
