Title
Former Post Office in Thames Street
Description
This view shows the former Post Office building at 21 Thames Street in the Hampton Village conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. It is listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit. Shown apparently in residential use, there is little evidence of its previous usage but today a sign above the door names the building as The Old Post House. A Morris 1800 is parked in its driveway. To the left of view is the derelict former soap factory at number 19, the word SOAP just visible in the paintwork to its flanking wall. Believed to date from 1760, the soap works are thought to have been run by WG Smith, Albion Soap Company, and the 1960s Simple brand until it fell into disuse and suffered severe fire damage. It was demolished to make way for a late 1990s apartment block which has a brick pediment and circular motif echoing the ventilation grill shown above the soap factory's first floor loading door.
