Title
Derelict soap works in Thames Street
Description
This view shows the derelict frontage of the soap and tallow works that stood on this tapering riverside site at 19 Thames Street, Hampton, apparently for over two hundred years before suffering severe fire damage and being demolished to make way for the late 1990s residential building developments that now occupy the site. The building to the left of the gateway and central yard bears a masonry roundel in its pediment showing EST 1760 , which can also be seen in a promotional cutaway illustration shown in John Sheaf's 'Hampton 100 Years Ago: a description of the roads and buildings in 1911-1912' (Borough of Twickenham Local History Society, 2015), depicting the building to the left as W G Smith's Soap Works, with the building to the right being the candle factory and tallow refinery. The factory is believed to have been in use by the Albion Soap Company and by the 1960s Simple Soap brand before falling into disuse. The taller building to the right has a first-floor loading door with a circular slatted ventilation port in its pediment, mirroring the establishment date shown in its neighbouring building. The building to the rear of the premises has a tall square brick chimney and smaller chimney stacks are also shown on the soap works building. Amongst the debris and broken kerb stones to the front of the factory, a sidecar for a motorcycle has apparently been abandoned wheel-less in front of the soap works building. Many of the buildings in the immediate area date back to the eighteenth-century and are now in the Hampton Village conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames.
