Interior of Stanmore Hall in Wood Lane
Description
View of stained glass window in Garden Room at Grade II* listed Stanmore Hall, Wood Lane, Harrow. Gothic revival building built c1843 by John Macduff Derick, altered and extended c1890 by B. Binyon with important internal work by William Morris and Company. Interior damaged by fire in 1979 and rebuilt as offices. Subsequently converted to twenty-three apartments in securely gated grounds. Listing number 1194606. The window was commissioned by William Knox D'Arcy (1849-1917). The artist was Louis Davis (1860-1941), an English watercolourist, book illustrator and stained-glass artist who lived in Paines Lane, Pinner. He was active in the Arts and Crafts Movement and Nikolaus Pevsner referred to him as the last of the Pre-Raphaelites. The design, which resembles a secular annunciation, shows a male archer kneeling with quiverful of arrows before a woman reading. Above them is a dove with an inscription Carpe Diem.
