View of High Barnet High Street
Description
A general view north along High Street, High Barnet. This view shows Fexman's glass and gift shop on the rightwith a Rover 2000 parked outside. On the left hand side, on the corner of Fitzjohn Avenue, stands the Red Lion advertising itself as a Schooner Inn with steak bars. It has an elaborate wrought iron bracket projecting across the pavement on which used to be a magnificent red lion clearly visible when coming up Barnet Hill. It is Grade II listed; list entry number 1061392. The current building is from 1930, by W.F. Foster (1876-1940) for the Meux Brewery. This site has a long history of use as a coaching inn, going back to the fifteenth century, positioned on a major road into London: the earliest reference to an inn on this site is to a messuage, 'late called the Cardinal's Hat and now the Antelope' in 1439. By the later nineteenth century it had become a 'Masonic, Family and Commercial Hotel'. The site of the coaching inn was truncated in 1901 on the laying-out of Fitzjohn Avenue. Past names include, 'Dandelion', 'The Avenue', and 'The Dandy Lion'. People wait at the bus stop opposite.
