Title
Sarum Chase in West Heath Road
Description
Front elevation of Sarum Chase, a grand detached house at 23 West Heath Road, Hampstead. A plaque on the wall says the house was the home of Francis Owen "Frank" Salisbury (1874-1962), a painter and stained glass artist. The house is built in Tudor style with parts half-timbered. A grand entrance door is reached up some steps. It is seen across a grassed area. An estate agent's sign offers it for sale as "This magnificent Tudor-style residence and cottage" with seven bedrooms, three "outstanding" reception rooms and a picture gallery. Dating from 1932 and designed by Vyvyan Salisbury for his uncle Frank Salisbury, the house was Grade II listed in 1974 as St Vedast's School for Boys, Sarum Chase; listing number 1379182. Its gates, railings and wall were separately Grade II listed in 1974; listing number 1379183. Salisbury bequeathed the house in trust to the British Council of Churches (BCC). The BCC sold the mansion and auctioned its contents. It became a private school and later a private residence. The name of the property derives from Sarum as the historic name of the city of Salisbury, the artist's surname.
