Title
Interior of Grim's Dyke House in Old Redding
Description
Inglenook chimneypiece in the billiard room of Grim's Dyke House (also known as Grimsdyke), Old Redding, Harrow Weald. The Grade II* listed house was built by Richard Norman Shaw in 1870-72, combining late Elizabethan style with Gothic revivalism, for the artist Frederick Goodall, although it is best known as the home of the dramatist W.S. Gilbert of the opera partnership Gilbert and Sullivan. The billiard room, designed by Arthur Cawston, was added in 1883, adjacent to what was formerly Goodall’s studio. This room included an inglenook fireplace but it was designed in a coarse Gothic style quite out of keeping with Shaw’s original scheme. In 1970 the Grade II* listed Grim's Dyke house was converted into a hotel, and this room is now known as Gillbrands Restaurant.
